Delphine moved away from Gannon to ease back into her seat. She didn’t say anything, just stared out into the darkness, and then beyond to the lights of the houses below. Just a few moments ago she had melted in his arms, had allowed her mouth to be ravished by his kiss. And for a few moments she had thought…

What exactly had she thought?

That for once in her life a man had appreciated her for being her, and not for what he could get from her? That was the story she knew all the other single women were bitching about, and rightly so. Men weren’t interested in love and forever after. They wanted the here and now. To leave their mark and move on.

But then, did she really want forever after? She’d honestly believed she’d had that with Liddell, but he had proved her wrong in the most hurtful way. Could she really risk her heart on another man? She honestly knew she couldn’t. It would be a cold day in hell before she would think about getting back into a serious relationship. If that was her story and she was sticking to it, why did the thought of a man like Gannon, known for changing bed partners so often he had a problem keeping up with names, bother her?

“Delphine?”

She pulled herself together, considering the man she was dealing with. His business mind was brilliant. His sense of duty to his employees was remarkable. The only time they’d covered his personal life was when he’d gone on record to say he was a single man and intended to stay that way for a long time. She figured that was his way of letting any single female readers of the magazine know what to expect.

When he said her name again, she slowly turned to look at him. Green eyes were searching hers and she couldn’t help but remember how much she had enjoyed the passion they hadn’t been able to keep in check.

“Why, Gannon? Why do you want me to go with you?” She knew the answer but wanted to hear him say it. To put things in perspective. To tell her outright that she meant nothing to him, but was just another woman to add to his list of many.

“I enjoy your company and figured you coming with me would be our way of getting to know each other better.”

His response hadn’t been good enough. She needed more. “Why would you want to get to know me better?”

He didn’t say anything for a minute, and she watched his expression closely. He was thinking hard, as if what he said was important. Why? He was the ultimate player, who should have his lines down pat. Why did it seem as if he was searching for words?

“I’ve never met a woman quite like you before, Delphine.”

She didn’t say anything. To keep the promise she’d made to her mother about giving love another try, and to prepare herself for dating, she’d purchased a book entitled Be Aware of Pick-Up Lines Men Use.
